The Original McKenzie Lumbar Roll

The first ever lumbar roll, The Original McKenzie Lumbar Roll is a roll-shaped lower-back support which can be connected to almost any chair for lower-back pain and discomfort relief. Available in two sizes to suit a greater range of body types and comfort preferences, this support sets the standard for reliable back therapy.

Who Can Make Gains with the Original McKenzie Lumbar Roll?

The Original McKenzie Lumbar Roll is a lumbar support which helps to prevent and reduce lower back discomfort caused by long periods of sitting in an unsupportive chair. It specifically targets therapy towards the lower back and spine, making it ideal for anyone looking to reduce pain and stiffness, helping them to move easier and perform better.

Which Options Are Available?

There are two options for the Original McKenzie Lumbar Roll available:

  • The 4" (or 100cm) roll
  • The 5" (or 125cm) roll

Please select your preference from the drop-down menu at the top of this page.

What Causes Back Pain when Sitting?

Generally speaking, sitting down causes the back muscles and ligaments to stretch, which puts stress on the surrounding tissues. Over time, this can build into discomfort, fatigue and ultimately pain. Since many chairs do not support the natural shape of the spine, they can encourage sitters to adopt hunched or bent positions, which only make this strain worse.

How Can a Lumbar Support Resolve This Pain?

By gently pushing in on your lower spine, a lumbar support helps your body and spine to achieve a more natural posture. This allows the muscles and ligaments surrounding your spine to relax, and gradually reduces the strain on surrounding tissues.

What Is the Difference Between The 4" and 5" Rolls?

There is only one difference between the two models of the Original McKenzie Lumbar Roll: the 4" model has a diameter of four inches (or 100cm) and the 5" model has a diameter of five inches (or 125cm). This has an impact on the kind of support they can offer, since the 5" model compresses to a larger size than the 4" model. Generally speaking, the 4" model is better for those with smaller builds and the 5" model for those with larger builds, but this will vary slightly by every individual's body and comfort preferences.

How Do I Use the Original McKenzie Lumbar Roll?

It is exceptionally easy to use the McKenzie Lumbar Roll. For best results it should be strapped to your chair at waist height. Then you should sit upright, as far back in your chair as is possible.

What Are the Dimensions of The Roll?

The diameter of each roll varies according to its title (4 and 5 inches respectively). However, both models of the lumbar roll are the same length: 30cm (around 12 inches).

How Long Is the Strap?

Because it is elasticated, the McKenzie Lumbar Roll strap is able to fit a large number of chairs comfortably. Before being stretched it is around 20 inches long (allowing for a total circumference of around 32 inches including the roll itself) and it can stretch to a maximum of 31 inches (allowing for a total circumference of around 43 inches).

Who Can Benefit from a McKenzie Round Roll?

A McKenzie round roll is ideal for anyone who experiences back discomfort from sitting in straight backed chairs or chairs which do not provide proper ergonomic support to their spine. This is particularly true for anyone whose job demands they sit for long periods of time without many opportunities to stand or walk around, such as office workers or professional drivers.

How Dense Is This Lumbar Roll?

This lumbar roll offers a medium level of density and support. While its support offers some firmness, its size can be misleading, and it compresses significantly under the weight of a person. This means that it is much less intrusive than the size might suggest and – excepting the absence of discomfort – is very easy to forget when sitting on it.

How Comfortable Is the McKenzie Round Roll?

As mentioned previously, because the roll compresses down when lent on, it does not feel awkward to sit against. More significantly, there are significant benefits to be felt over elongated periods and particularly the course of a work day, in the absence of discomfort.

Which Kinds of Chairs Is This Lumbar Roll Suitable For?

The Original McKenzie Round Roll works well with a wide selection of chairs of different kinds, including:

  • Office chairs
  • Settees or sofas – if there is an appropriate back-cushion  or other location to strap the support
  • Arm chairs
  • Car Seats
  • Desk chairs
  • Kitchen/ dining chairs
  • Any other straight backed chair in which you must spend extended periods

When Should I Use the McKenzie Lumbar Roll?

You should use the Original McKenzie Lumbar Roll whenever you expect to sit for a long period of time, even before your back pain has developed – since it works best to prevent the emergence of discomfort. Because it uses a standard clip buckle, the roll is easy to attach and remove from chairs, so can be moved between different seats during the day.

What if I Want Something with a More Shallow Profile?

If you require a cushion with less depth than this round roll, the Original McKenzie Slimline Lumbar Roll is an asymmetrical alternative with a depth of 2" (roughly half that of this Original McKenzie Round Roll). This flatter design is ideal for elderly users, or those with smaller builds, and features a crescent shape to hug the contours of your back.

Can I Buy a Heavy-Duty Version?

For firmer support than is offered by the standard model, the Original McKenzie Heavy Duty Lumbar Roll is a high density alternative. In the same shape, and available with the same thicknesses as the standard model, this version simply offers firmer support.

Is There a Travel Alternative?

The Original McKenzie Airback Lumbar Roll is an inflatable alternative designed to maximise comfort and prevent pain when travelling. This can be a particular problem on planes, trains or coaches, and the inflatable design of the Airback allows it to be quickly packed away or used whenever needed.

Is There a More Advanced Alternative?

Featuring an injection moulded foam in place of the firm density foam of the standard model, the Original McKenzie Super Lumbar Roll offers superior, dynamic support. This is perfect for those who continue to experience discomfort even with a standard roll support.
